ArcelorMittal Texas HBI specializes in the production of high-quality hot briquetted iron using natural gas based direct reduction, enabling consistent chemistry, improved yields, and lower carbon intensity in EAF steelmaking.

Our product supports customers by delivering low residuals and predictable metallurgical performance for demanding applications.

In April of 2022, ArcelorMittal acquired an 80% share of the business located in Portland, Texas near Corpus Christi, as part of its strategy to strengthen and grow its presence in North America. The operation plays an important role in expanding the company’s made-and-melted capabilities the United States.

What is hot‑briquetted iron?

Hot‑briquetted iron (HBI) is a premium form of direct-reduced iron (DRI) made by reducing iron‑ore pellets with natural gas and compressing the hot material into dense, stable briquettes. This process produces a high‑purity feedstock with low residual elements and uniform metallurgical properties ideal for demanding steel grades.

HBI from ArcelorMittal Texas is distinguished by low residual levels (Cu, Cr, Ni, Mo, Sn) as well as favorably low phosphorous and sulfur levels. Additional carbon in the HBI and a low fines content contribute to an improved yield in your EAF operation.
