What are laser-welded blanks?

Laser‑welded blanks (LWBs), or tailored blanks, are sheets of steel made by combining different grades with varying thicknesses, strengths, or coatings. The grades are laser‑welded together so each area of the sheet delivers the right strength and deformation characteristics, and the final sheet can be hot‑ or cold‑stamped into shape. This creates a single sheet engineered for optimal performance and lightweighting.

The result is a tailor‑made solution with significant advantages. Today, LWBs are widely used in automotive manufacturing, especially in structural components such as door rings, rails, pillars, and rocker panels where lightweighting and crash performance are essential.
