ArcelorMittal Calvert’s new steelmaking facility represents a major milestone in the site’s evolution, transforming the operation from a world‑class steel finishing site into a fully integrated steel producer. 

This strategic investment enables Calvert to produce steel slabs on site, reducing reliance on external suppliers while strengthening operational control, supply chain resilience, and speed to market.

Our facility is capable of producing approximately 1.5 million tonnes of steel slabs annually to support the Hot Strip Mill and the diverse needs of Calvert’s end‑user markets.

At the core of the operation is a state‑of‑the‑art electric arc furnace (EAF) and slab caster designed to support advanced, high‑quality steel production. The facility allows slabs to be cast on demand and directly integrated into downstream operations. This seamless flow improves coordination across production stages, tightens quality control, and provides greater flexibility in scheduling and product mix. As a result, ArcelorMittal Calvert can respond more quickly to changing market conditions while meeting “melted and made” requirements for customers who prioritize domestically produced steel.

One of Calvert’s distinguishing capabilities is its RH Degasser, leveraging advanced technology to support efficient, lower‑carbon steel production. This system enables a wide range of steel grades and is a key enabler of modern, sustainable steelmaking.

The steelmaking facility supports the production of a broad spectrum of increasingly complex and high‑value steel grades, including advanced high‑strength steels (AHSS) for automotive applications, API line pipe steels for energy markets, and other demanding exposed and structural grades.

These capabilities enable Calvert to serve critical industries with greater consistency, performance, and reliability, while supporting evolving technical, regulatory, and customer requirements.
