ArcelorMittal: smarter steels for people and planet

At ArcelorMittal, our purpose is to develop smarter steels for people and planet

We live in an age of remarkable progress, where invention and ingenuity are driving unprecedented advances in global development and living standards. From healthcare and agriculture to urbanisation and energy generation, the transformation of the way we live, work, eat, travel and communicate is nothing less than extraordinary.

Technology has a critical role in this transformation, but so do the materials that build our world. The demand for materials will only increase as populations grow and global development continues. With our world increasingly concerned with matters of sustainability, the next era of economic and social progress must meet the needs of the present without compromising those of future generations.

As the world’s leading steel and mining company we have an inherent stake in this and a clear responsibility. Steel has played an integral part in much of the progress we have made in the last hundred years. In fact, steel has become fundamental to how we work, live, create and build.

There is no doubt in our minds that steel is as relevant as ever to the future success of our world. As one of the only materials to be completely reusable and recyclable, it will play a critical role in building the circular economy of the future. But like everything, steel needs to evolve, become smarter and increasingly sustainable. This is our challenge and our commitment.

Just as ArcelorMittal saw the value in creating the first truly global steel and mining champion, so we are at the forefront of the next phase of transformation: inventing smarter steels for people and planet.

Our capacity to lead is driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for excellence. We reward boldness, value curiosity and see opportunity in a challenge. This approach has seen us drive value through growth, delivering as a world-class operator of assets for all steel products from commodity to tailor-made cutting-edge solutions.

Today, there are thousands of grades of steel, half of which did not exist ten years ago. These new steels, many developed by our scientists and engineers, push the boundaries of what is possible. We never accept that the limits of our material have been reached, continually innovating both smarter steel solutions and better processes for making steels. Our scale and scope mean we are the only steel company that can truly leverage global best practice and expertise across the regions of the world. For us, an invention or improvement in efficiency can have a transformative global impact, as it quickly becomes a practical reality for our day-to-day operations.

We foster this culture of innovation by putting research and development at the heart of our operations. We have some of the best and brightest people in the business, engineers who work for us because they get to tackle the most complex of problems. That is how we invented solutions for our customers that lower the weight of automobiles while making them stronger and safer, and how we created reusable steel systems for buildings that will transform the carbon efficiency of construction. And, we continue to push boundaries, whether developing technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of steel, 3D printing automotive parts using steel powders or, through the adoption of AI and advanced automation across our operations.

We know our people are key to our success. With more than 125,000 employees we are more than just a company, we are a community. Wherever we operate, safety and wellbeing is the priority. Believing no-one ever reaches their full potential, we encourage our people to challenge themselves, so they can develop, grow and progress with ArcelorMittal.

We understand the responsibility to society that comes with leadership. Our stakeholders must have confidence we are operating safely, managing our resources and footprint responsibly and making a positive contribution to the global environment as well as the communities where we operate.

The issues of sustainability as the world strives to achieve the United Nations sustainable development goals are bigger than any one company. That is why it is so important we work alongside stakeholders to build an environment that supports investment in smarter, more sustainable steels, providing long term solutions for the world’s future infrastructure and products, for the benefit of all.

At ArcelorMittal our purpose is to develop smarter steels form people and planet. Steels made using innovative processes which use less energy, emit less carbon and reduce costs. Steels that are cleaner, stronger and reusable. Steels for electric vehicles and renewable energy infrastructure that will support societies as they transform through this century. With steel at our core, our inventive people and an entrepreneurial culture at heart, we will support the world in making that change. This is what we believe it takes to be the steel company of the future.
